Tracking the Hidden Aftermath of Hurricane Helene

What happens after the floodwaters disappear?

Our team is studying fungal growth in homes and buildings impacted by Hurricane Helene to better understand how flooding influences indoor microbial communities and potential health risks. By sampling flood-damaged environments across western North Carolina, we hope to generate data that can inform recovery efforts and improve community resilience following climate-related disasters.

This work was recently featured in a WSOC-TV news story highlighting the ongoing research and the importance of understanding the environmental consequences of severe weather events.
